Raising Awareness, Educating & Conserving Birds of Prey Around the World.

Our Aim

Raptor Aid CIO is a registered charity within England (1177127) whose aim is to help educate, support and carry out bird of prey conservation in the UK and abroad. Our two main charitable objectives are:

To advance the education of the public in matters pertaining to birds of prey (raptors), their habitats, species conservation and monitoring, ornithology and avian biology.

To promote for the benefit of the public the conservation and protection of birds of prey (raptors) and their habitats.

Birds of prey around the world have interested man for decades; whether it was through religion, society, literature or cultures; they have had some influence on humanity.

In modern days with the rise in human populations, use of natural resources and commercialisation of the world, birds of prey like many other species have felt the pressure on their survival.

We hope to help more people understand birds of prey, including how they live and how we as the human race can live cooperatively with these incredible birds.

Grants for Conservation.

Never has there been a more important time to invest in our conservationists and projects that aim to halt the loss of global biodiversity. Our grants are aimed to support individuals and projects trying to make a difference for birds of prey all over the world. We want to help passionate people with a drive to learn more and conserve birds of prey in the wild.

The Merlin by Richard Sale
£39.99

The Merlin is a very special bird. One of the smallest ‘True Falcons’, it stands outside the usually assumed grouping of the others, and also prefers a habitat which differs markedly from them. While most falcons are found in warmer climes, the Merlin is a northern dweller, occupying a circumpolar range at the fringes of the Arctic. Only the Gyrfalcon has a range which extends further north, though Peregrine Falcon sub-species also breed in the Arctic. It might be assumed that with its vast range the Merlin has been well studied, but nowhere is it common.

This book draws together what is currently known about this elusive, but beautiful and enchanting species. Written by Richard Sale it includes 172 full colour photographs and 56 figures and tables, 352 pages in all priced at £39.99 plus P&P. I hope you enjoy reading it.

Raptors of the World (Helm, 2001)
£35.00

Raptors of the World (Helm, 2001) is the definitive handbook

to this most popular group of birds. This new field guide uses all of

the plates from Raptors of the World, with a concise, revised text on

facing pages, to create a conveniently-sized, lightweight field

reference covering all 340 raptor species. Several of the plates have

been reworked and repainted for this guide. The book also has an

updated colour distribution map for each species.

Much of the extensive introductory material has been retained in

this guide, with the addition of a complete species list containing all

subspecies and brief details of their ranges. Armed with this guide,

birders will be able to identify with confidence any raptor encountered

anywhere in the world.

The Common Kestrel by Richard Sale
£39.99

The Kestrel was once a common sight ‘hovering’ above grass verges on the UK’s motorway network, this being a characteristic that separated it from the other birds of prey that breed in the British Isles.

This book investigates the recent decline, after first exploring all aspects of the Kestrels’ life, from plumage and diet through breeding to survival. Data for this investigation was collected from across the Kestrel’s range, but also includes a four-year study using video cameras in a barn in southern England. Inertial measurement units and hi-speed photography were also used in flight studies. The result is a comprehensive book on this most fascinating of small raptors drawing together what is currently known about this elusive, but beautiful and enchanting species. It includes 297 full colour photographs and 127 figures and tables. 392 pages in all priced at £39.99 plus P&P. I hope you enjoy reading it. In 2021 ‘The Common Kestrel’ won the U.S. Wildlife Society’s book of the year award in 2021.

The Peregrine Falcon [2nd limited edition] by Richard Sale and Steve Watson
£59.99

Now in stock available to ship.

Peregrine Falcons are iconic aerial apex predators sometimes held in mystical regard, occasionally elevated to the status of myth and legend. This new book investigates all aspects of Peregrine life, from plumage, through diet, population dynamics, breeding and survival. Peregrines breed on all continents apart from Antarctica and data has been collected from across that vast range enabling provision of information on each of the 17-19 subspecies (subject to debate) as to diet, distribution and physical characteristics.

Having sold out the first edition, published in November 2022, the authors have now produced an extended and significantly updated and re-written limited print run second edition which includes published science up to August 2024. In particular, the science of phylogenetics has developed dramatically since the first edition following landmark discoveries in China and this is covered in some detail. Furthermore, one of the authors (RS) has conducted and describes here a series of CT scans to study wing bone structure, nasal passages and brain cavities.

RS has also conducted and describes experiments in falcon olfaction. Modern technology (inertial measurement units built by RS) has been used to study the flights which have made Peregrines famous as arguably the fastest creature on the planet. The result is a new comprehensive book on this most iconic bird, including over 150 full colour photographs from across the world and over 200 figures and tables across 576 pages in all. We hope you enjoy reading it.
